Sella & Mosca Tanca Farra 2004

Sella & Mosca Tanca Farra 750ml 2004
Sku: 10367

Sella & Mosca’s Tanca Farra is an innovative blend of Cannonau and Cabernet Sauvignon. Cannonau is a variety that has long thrived in Sardinia, while Cabernet is a more recent introduction to the island. Sella & Mosca has experimented with Cabernet since the late 1890s and planted Cabernet vines in its highly acclaimed Marchese di Villamarina vineyard in the late 1950s. The name Tanca Farra (“Iron Earth” in theSardinian dialect) refers to the high iron content of the soil in this portion of the estate, a factor credited with a conspicuous role in the resulting complexity and depth of this wine.

Tasting notes
Color - Ruby red with garnet reflections Bouquet - Full, mature fruit with herbaceous and tarry notes. Taste - Full-bodied, dry, balanced and harmonious. Elegant structure or soft tannins

Tanca is the Sardinian word for "closed,” and farrà means "iron.” This important wine (a 50-50 blend of Cannonau and Cabernet Sauvignon) is the product of clay and iron-rich soils. The wine is dark and dense with lingering flavors of black cherry and exotic spice. M.L.

Technical notes
Grape Varieties - 50% Cannonau, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinification - Both grape varieties are harvested manually and mechanically from September through October at the peak of maturity. After crushing, each variety undergoes a three-day cold maceration, followed by a temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel vats at 72°-82°F for ten days. Only in the final phase of fermentation are the two varieties blended together. Aging - Three years, at first in barriques and then in traditional large Slavonian oak casks kept in cool dark cellars. Aged a further 12 months in bottle prior to release.

Food pairing
Serve at room temperature and open bottle a couple of hours before pouring or decant ahead of time. Splendid with hearty red meat dishes, game and mature cheeses.
